57/366: living wall (wall series #9)

I love how plants always find a way to survive, to thrive among ridiculous obstacles. It is also interesting to note that life of this sort springs forth from what is otherwise known as "urban decay."

56/366: your one stop shop

But for what, I don't know. I guess it's just a general one stop shop. The store is completely empty, so perhaps it is some sort of elaborate existential joke or commentary about the essence of consumer culture.

55/366: street art minimalism

Minimalism is probably the wrong term. There's something about the unrefined nature of this entire seen: bare plywood background, hastily cut paper, simple outline, mysterious spider-in-the-mind, stamped on multi-colored circles. For some reason, I love it.

54/366: packin' heat

I love the goofy, smiling band advertisement behind the graffiti.

52/366: behind bars

This is actually a pun, as this parking lot is itself behind some bars/clubs.

51/366: trombone

I can't tell for sure, but this seems to be a stencil-sticker combination. Small, elegant, and alone, it reminds me of the Peanuts gang for some reason.

50/366: in the groove

It feels good to make it to picture #50. I'm starting to get into the groove of this 366 project. This is one of the best stencils I've seen around town in a while. Regrettably, it is in an out-of-the-way location and probably has a small audience.

49/366: telephone booth

Telephone booths have become such a rarity that when they appear now it is usually as a novelty item, like this one. One thing that draws me to this one is that the lettering is perfect while the paint behind the lettering is faded and distressed. I'm sure this would make a good metaphor for something.

47/366: Twenty-three

I'm going to pretend that my crooked shot is crooked on purpose, an compositional choice made to exaggerate a sense of ramshackleness. I've long been fascinated, in our age of big and more, with with small houses, especially those less than 800 square feet (or this one, which I think is less than 600 square feet).

44/366: heavy handed

Power boxes offer great flat surfaces for street artists. Plus they tend to be hidden from plain view, which provides the kind of cover one needs to ply this vagabond craft. Though it is faded (I think it is distressed on purpose by the artist), I was intrigued by the use of the classic photostrip, and its conversion to a sticker format.

43/366: handsome

I'm not sure if that's a sword he's got (making the wispy additions conjure up images of the three musketeers) or a light saber.

42/366: practice space

Every now and then I run into a densely packed area of graffiti that looks like a practice space. Or perhaps it is the work of some sort of graffiti curator. I especially like the stencil-sticker combos, as well as creative attempts to extend the reach of the original sticker (usually a packaging label) through combination and cutting.

38/366: on retainer (wall series #5)

This retaining wall runs around one of the most celebrated houses of excessive wealth in town. Reports are that the wall cost more to build than did most people's houses. The wall is always fronted by a wonderful array of flowers.

36/366: curvature in white and shadow (wall series #3)

35/366: red over white (wall series #2)

34/366: blue & white (wall series #1)

I'm starting wall week with formalism. I have a busy couple of days ahead of me, so I'm going to add Monday and Tuesday's images now as well.

Theme: Wall Week

This week I'm going to try to present images of walls as a theme. Enjoy "The Week of Walls" at Opportunistic Body Language!

33/366: the undisputed king of the sticker

Well, actually bigger than king; this one is giant. I love seeing one of these classic stickers. It's the visual equivalent of hearing a song from my formative days.

32/366: hugs, on

I made it through the first month of the photoblogging! Here's two hugsmugglers for you.
